Liberty Bell students get a peek of Career and Technical Education

CTE Tour

Liberty Bell students received a peek at what Career and Technical Education looks like at Science Hill High School as they’ve toured the CTE facility over the past two weeks.

Liberty Bell Counselors Stacey Philbrick and Seth Johns have taken 7th-grade students on tours of the Science Hill CTE building to expose them to the different programs offered. Liberty Bell 8th graders will have the opportunity to take the tour in the spring. Science Hill also hopes to have a Career and Technical Education Open House in February to allow students hands-on opportunities.

“This was our first year taking 7th grade on the tour, and the response from students has been overwhelmingly positive,” Philbrick said. “Our students are excited about all of the college, career and technical programs available to them at Science Hill, and they will now be even more prepared to begin thinking about their 4-year plan next school year.”

Students walked the hallways of the CTE building and stopped in classrooms to hear about the different programs. Some of the programs include agriculture, architecture, construction, culinary arts, cosmetology, child care, digital media, health care, nursing, teaching, welding and other career fields. After the tour, students completed a survey in which 88 percent of the 472 students who took the survey said that they learned about a program they’re interested in pursuing.

“Having the 7th-grade students come over to tour has been a tremendous way for us to showcase the great programs we offer,” Science Hill assistant principal Charles Corwin said. “By bringing the middle school students over, they are able to learn more about what happens in our CTE classes. This will help them determine which classes they want to take when they come to Science Hill. The earlier we can expose students to all of the many aspects of CTE, the better we will be as a school and a community.”
