Dr. John Boyd’s Biography

In a career that currently spans 47 years, Dr. John Boyd has served as a teacher and administrator at the elementary school, middle school, high school, central office, and university levels.  His service in the Johnson City Schools began in 1974 as a teacher at Henry Johnson Elementary School. A decade later he was named principal of Columbus Powell Elementary School and served there until its closing.  In 1985, Boyd was named principal of South Side Elementary School. Under his leadership, the 1917 building was replaced in 1996 with a state of the art facility on an expanded site. During Boyd’s 20-year tenure there, South Side was awarded both the “Boyer National Award for Parents as Partners” and later the Tennessee State PTA Award for Best Practices in Parent Involvement.

In 2005, Dr. Boyd was named Supervisor of Instruction and Facilities.  During this period significant renovations to North Side Elementary, Indian Trail Middle School, and the Liberty Bell campus of Science Hill High School were planned and developed.  In 2007, Dr. Boyd was named principal of Science Hill High School which at that time was configured to include grades 8 through 12 on four campuses. During his four years of service at Science Hill he helped develop and oversee the construction of a $26 million dollar renovation of the main campus and the construction of Kermit Tipton Stadium.  The stadium brought football to the Science Hill campus for the first time in its history.

Boyd earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Technological University in 1972.  Five years later he received his Master of Arts in Education Administration. In 2005, he earned his Doctor of Education from East Tennessee State University where he has served on the faculty of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis for the past 8 years.
