Steve Spurrier’s Biography

Steve Spurrier graduated from Science Hill High School in 1963, and his name has become synonymous with the Toppers.  After graduating, Spurrier found success at the University of Florida as a quarterback – winning the 1966 Heisman Trophy – and later as their head football coach from 1990 to 2001.  During his time at the University of Florida, Spurrier won an NCAA national championship in 1996. But of all the championships Spurrier has acquired, his favorite to recall are Science Hill’s back-to-back state championships in baseball during the 1962 and 1963 season.

Spurrier may be one of the most decorated athletes to graduate from Science Hill as he lettered in basketball, football and baseball during his time in Johnson City.

After Spurrier’s time at the University of Florida ended as a player, he spent a decade in the NFL as a backup quarterback and punter.  He then pursued a career in coaching which helped him make an even bigger name for himself. During his time in time on the college sidelines, Spurrier amassed a 228-89-2 record and earned the title of “Old Ball Coach”. Spurrier’s earned six SEC titles during his time with the Gators and ended his college coaching career after 10 seasons at the University of South Carolina. Spurrier coached in the NFL and, most recently, he coached the Orlando Apollo of the dissolved Alliance of American Football in 2019 to a championship in their only season.
