Auburn University Engineering Day

Attention all students: Auburn University is holding an Engineering Day on February 25 from 8:00—1:00. This is an excellent opportunity for students to explore Auburn’s wide range of engineering disciplines. Students can view exhibits, talk with faculty and departmental representatives, and meet with current students who know first-hand what it’s like to study engineering. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Seminar

We wanted to share a great opportunity for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students that is taking place on Saturday, December 4 at Tusculum University – the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Seminar. This seminar helps further leadership skills, is a great resume builder, and teaches communication and public speaking skills.

This all day event (9am-5pm) includes Dr. Adolph Brown as our keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Brown is well known for inspiring and encouraging participants to tap into their inner potential to create the change they want to see. Presentations and teambuilding exercises will focus on our key focus areas of leadership, communication, and collaboration. Participants will also learn about Rotary, Interact, and Rotary Youth Exchange. This year's unique RYLA event will be an engaging and transformative experience for all participants!

Aviation Science Team 

On behalf of the Dean of the APSU College of STEM, we would like to invite your students to an Aviation Science Education Facility Open House.  APSU is home to the state’s only Helicopter Pilot Bachelor’s degree program with its state of the art technology and highly trained instructors who are ready to help your students earn their degree and prepare for five FAA certifications.

Coolidge Scholar Application

Outstanding Juniors (seniors may NOT apply) that are interested in Public Policy and Public Service should consider applying to become a Coolidge Scholar.  Coolidge scholars receive a full tuition scholarship that includes all expenses to ANY 4 year college.  Be sure to begin reading over the requirements for this scholarship right away.  Part of the application process includes reading President Calvin Coolidge’s Autobiography.  More information and the application can be found at: and applications must be completed by January 19,2022.


Eastman Black Month Oratorical Contest

It is time once again for the Eastman Black History Month Oratorical Contest that provides local high school students an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of African American contributors to the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).  This contest also provides students an opportunity to improve their writing, communication, public speaking and leadership skills.  Students selected as authors of the top 15 essays will be notified by Feb 1, 2022 and the top 5 essays will be invited to present their orations at the Annual Eastman Black History Month Luncheon held February 21, 2022 at 6pm.  The 1st place student will receive a $1,500 cash prize; 2nd place $1000; 3rd place $750; and 4th place $500 and 5th place $250.  The academic sponsor of the first place student will receive a $100 gift card for his/her classroom.  Visit for more info and to submit your essay.  Deadline for submissions is January 3, 2022.


100 Men Walk 

On Saturday Oct 23 Carver Recreation will be hosting the 100 Men Walk event to help raise awareness for men's health. The information will be posted below:

Berea College

African American Juniors with financial need (household income of $40K or less) and a GPA of at least 3.4 that has demonstrated leadership and character should consider becoming a Carter Woodson Legacy Scholar nominee at Berea College.  Berea students receive a tuition promise scholarship which means that students will receive a tuition free education at Berea.  See your counselor and visit

MTSU’s annual True Blue Tour

MTSU’s annual True Blue Tour will be at the Johnson City Country Club on Wednesday, October 27th at 6:00 PM. This FREE event is ideal for students and families of high school juniors or seniors interested in MTSU, where attendees will have the chance to talk with representatives from nearly every academic program, ask questions about financial aid and housing, and meet current students. But the best part is that every student who attends will be entered to win one of several prize drawings throughout the event, including scholarships!!

For high school students from Carter, Cocke, Greene, Unicoi, Washington counties, who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree. Your annual scholarship of at least $17,883 awaits. U.S. Presidential Scholars Program 

SHHS has the opportunity to nominate two seniors to be considered for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. One senior may be nominated from each school for the general academic component of the program, and one senior may be nominated for the CTE component of the program.  


General Academic Component applicants are based on academic success and perseverance. The program emphasizes the following areas on their application:? 

  • Academic achievement 
  • Leadership skills 
  • Community involvement 
  • Overcoming obstacles  
  • Strong writing skills 

CTE Component applicants are considered based on excellence in career and technical education (CTE). This component emphasizes the following areas on the application: 

  • Academic rigor 
  • Technical competence 
  • Employability skills 
  • Ingenuity and creativity 

Students interested in being considered for one of SHHS’s nominations for either program should turn their resume in to their counselor no later than October 22nd.

ASVAB Information 


The Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a aptitude test developed by the Department of Defense. 

There are two versions of the test:

  • The enlistment version of the ASVAB is given at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and is used for recruiting purposes only.
  • The student testing program, also known as the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP), is used for career exploration and is given in high schools and community colleges, at job corps centers and at correctional facilities

We use the test to help students find a possible career that they are interested in. We have posted the links to some helpful parts of their website here. We are going to offer the ASVAB Test here at Science Hill on Sept 27th and again on Feb 8th. The registration for the Sept test has closed however we will be posting the registration link for the Feb one soon!

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Attention Seniors: The Coca-Cola Scholars Program application is now open! 150 students will be named Coca-Cola Scholars and each will receive a $20,000 scholarship. Seniors with a 3.0 GPA who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. The online application requires students to list their high school and community activities, grades, and service hours. There are no essays or recommendations needed to apply. Attention sophomores and juniors interested in Mercer University:

The CASE program is underway. The Certificate of Achievement and Service Excellence (CASE) Program seeks to identify students who embody Mercer’s commitment to research and service. Eligibility requirements include a 3.5 GPA or higher and demonstrated continued involvement in service during high school. Students who are chosen will be given a $500 scholarship, contingent upon their acceptance and matriculation to Mercer University. The CASE program will also host a multi-day summer on-campus experience and participating students will be named CASE Service Scholars and will be awarded an additional $2000 scholarship. Interested students should submit a resume to their counselor by October 7, 2021.


"Meet A Moc" 

UT Chattanooga has a new program called “Meet a Moc” that will take place in Kingsport on September 23.  This program was designed as a “drop in” for students who may have missed their local college fair or who might have more questions that they’d like to ask of their admissions counselor. Any high school student interested in learning more about one of the U.S. Military academies is encouraged to attend Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger’s Military Service Academy Day.  This event will take place on September 18, 2021 from 9-11:30amEST at Walters State Community College in Morristown, TN.  Representatives from all military academies will be on hand, as well as members from all branches of the US military to share information and answer questions.  You must RSVP for this event by emailing:


**Attention Seniors**-- Roan Scholars Program

Seniors interested in applying for the Science Hill recommendation to the Roan Scholars program can pick up an application packet in the main office. Application packets will be available beginning Monday, August 16, 2021. The deadline to return applications to Steffany Akers in the main office is Friday, September 3, 2021. UT Success Academy: University of Tennessee

Attention students who’ve been accepted to the University of Tennessee:  A new program called the UT Success Academy will have its first class this fall.  This program is designed to maximize new first-year Black and Latinx male students’ transition to the Volunteer Community.  This program will have customized classes, community building, and a $2000 annual scholarship.  For more information go to
